Why does Talk Money matter to students?
Money affects every part of student life — from choosing accommodation and managing food budgets to affording textbooks and social activities. Yet, many students feel uncomfortable talking about money, often fearing judgment or simply not knowing where to start.
According to recent research by Talk Money:
- Only 38% of 7–17 year olds say they learned how to manage money at school.
- 11.5 million adults have less than £100 in savings.
- 9 million adults regularly rely on credit or borrowing to cover essentials

As part of Talk Money Week there has been a lot of discussion around why it is important to students. This includes reducing anxiety, having an open discussion about financial security and to support with better financial planning. Ways in which you could save include:
- Set up a saving account
- Shop around for university accommodation
- Research bank account incentives
- Get a railcard or walk more
- Cook more = Spend less
- Buy second-hand or sell on Vinted
Other Support at University or College
Money worries are a leading cause of stress among students. By talking about money and seeking support, students can take control of their finances and protect their mental health.
Universities often offer financial wellbeing services, money advice teams, and emergency hardship funds — but many students don’t know they exist. Talk Money Week is a great time to explore these resources.
