Half-Term Fun on a Budget: Free and Affordable Activities for Students

Half-term is the perfect time to relax, reset, and have some fun without worrying about exams or coursework. But if you’re looking for ways to make the most of your half term without spending loads of money. Here are some great free and low-cost activities to keep you entertained and active this half-term.

  1. Explore Your Local Area

You’d be surprised at how much there is to discover close to home that you have never seen. There’s always something new to see or exciting landmarks that tourists come and visit. You can find them by going on the visit page for your city such as www.visitlondon.com

2. Visit Free Museums and Galleries

Many museums and galleries in England are free to visit. Whether you’re into history, art, or science, there’s something for everyone. Some great options include:

  • The British Museum (London)
  • The Natural History Museum (London)
  • The Tate Modern (London)
  • The National Gallery (London)
  • The Science and Industry Museum (Manchester)
  • The Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery
  • The Bristol Museum & Art Gallery

Check out what’s available in your area and see if they’re hosting any special events during half-term. There are also free activities if you google “free activities half term near” and find results like these ones in the North West February half term Liverpool family activities 2025 – North West for kids

3. Get Active Outdoors

Staying active doesn’t have to mean an expensive gym membership. Go for a run, try cycling, or take part in a free outdoor workout. Some parks offer free fitness equipment or organised activities. If you enjoy sports, get a group of friends together for a game of football or netball in your park. You can usually reserve a space online.

 4. Join a Library Event

Local libraries often run free events like book clubs, creative writing workshops, and film screenings. Even if there aren’t any events, borrowing books, comics, and even digital magazines for free is a great way to stay entertained during the break.

5. Try a DIY Creative Project

Why not use this time to get creative? Try painting, journaling, writing poetry, or upcycling old clothes. You don’t need expensive materials—just some imagination and a few basic equipment.

6. Learn a New Skill Online

With so many free online courses and tutorials available, half-term is a great time to pick up a new skill. Try learning a language, coding, photography, or even cooking! Websites like Duolingo, Coursera, and YouTube are full of free resources to get you started.

7. Volunteer in Your Community

Volunteering is a great way to meet new people, gain experience, and give back to your local community. Look for opportunities at food banks, charity shops, or litter clean-up projects in your area.

8. Have a Movie or Game Night with Friends

Host a film night at home with friends or family—grab some popcorn and stream a movie or binge-watch a new series. If you prefer games, organise a board game or video game tournament.

9. Go on a Day Trip

If you can get discounted or free travel, consider a day trip to another town or city. Some bus and train companies offer discounts for students, so check if there are any affordable options for you to explore somewhere new for the day.

10. Plan for your future

Use your time off to think about what’s next. Whether it’s university, apprenticeships, or your next first job, researching opportunities and planning can help you feel more prepared. Look up free online webinars, university open days, or career talks.

Half-term doesn’t have to be expensive to be fun. Whether you’re exploring, learning, or just relaxing, there are plenty of free and affordable ways to enjoy your break
